Sassy - Solar

The previous owner had a solar system installed. I believe it is based around two 100w panels. These are mounted on the roof near the front of the trailer. There is also a portable suitcase that is set-up and attached when not moving.

There are two Interstate GC2 6v batteries mounted on the tongue behind the propane tanks. Connected in series these provide 225 Ahr at 12v. But being flooded lead acid batteries they can be discharded to 50% giving some 112 Ahr of usable change. I suspect these were added with the solar install but am not sure.

The electrical is mounted under the drivers side dinette seat. That includes a Renogy Commander MPPT Solar Charge Controller, an AIMS 1000w Pure Sine Inverter, and an Inteli-Power PD9245C 45A converter/changer. It had a larger inverter, either 2000 or 3000w, which I changed out for the 1000w. When without a hookup we use very little 120AC power and the larger converter had considerably more parasitic draw. I think they installed the large inverter so they could run the microwave off grid. Fine, but the battery bank and charging isn't, in my opinion, enough to run the microwave. I also suspect the converter/charger was original equipment for the Bigfoot. Looking into that cabinet shows the wiring to be a mess, but it has worked flawlessly for us. In the picture the large black box is a transfer switch which, I believe, prevents the inverter from running the refrigerator. If it doesn't see AC power it reverts to propane.

Associated with the Renogy solar controller is a monitor for it, an MT-50 Remote Tracer Meter. It shows what the solar system is doing. There is also a Victron BMT-712 Smart Battery Monitor, so there must be a shunt in the battery circuit. The Victron measures current into and out of the battery bank giving the best state of charge measure. I've hardly used the readout though as the bluetooth connection to a cell phone is easier and more convenient. The button above the Victron turns the AIMS inverter on and off.

Not a particularly large solar system but bullet proof and more than adequate for what we do. No complaints. The only reason we've considered adding more capacity is to switch the refrigerator to a Danfoss compressor unit. We've considered this but that's a whole different discussion.
