Ziggy - Handling

We took Ziggy in to the local AutoWorks soon after purchase. They did a Used Car Inspection and found only a few problems which were fixed. This only covered the chassis not any of the RV add-ons. I asked them to particularly look at the steering as it seemed loose. They suggested an alignment which we did, but did little for the play in the steering wheel.

Soon after the inspection and minor repairs we took a short trip to Bonita Campground some 120 miles from home. The trip was down right scary. The play in the steering along with the sway and wandering in Ziggy was down right dangerous. Densie refused to drive it after a mile or two.

After returning home we took Ziggy to a specialized alignment shop for some additional caster in hopes of better handling. The mechanic at Jim's Alignment and Brake re-aligned Ziggy but more importantly found significant play in the steering box. He was able to tighten this up which improved handling significantly.

There is still significant sway and wanding, but doesn't feel down right dangerous. "Safe" to drive" but not a pleasant experience. Some Internet research shows this is common for the wide body Ford Pleasureways.

A number of fixes have been used to improve sway and wander. From reading it sounds like to most improvement comes from beefier leaf springs. The stock springs from Ford are woefully inadequate once the weight of the RV is added. Pleasureway kept the weak Ford springs, a design error. Ziggy has anti-sway bars and rear wheel spacers which may or may not be stock from Pleasureway. There is also a front steering damper which is obviously after market. We're not the first ones to tackle this problem.

We plan have a WeldTec 5" suspension lift put on to get more ground clearance. Stock Pleasureways like ours have very little ground clearance with some critical and expensive components hanging underneath. To go off pavement we need more clearance. The WeldTec lift kit includes significantly heavier leaf springs along with new shocks and heavier front coil springs. Reports from others indicate the handling is like night and day. Our hope is that will solve the handling problems we're having. Fingers crossed. I'll post on the "lift" when it's done.
