Coming up LoLo Pass we noticed Larry (our RAM) seemed jittery under acceleration, barely noticeable but worriesome. Also, found one of our trailer axles was bent, bent up in the middle like it should be but way more that it's supposed to be. In the above picture it's easy to see the front axle is far more bent up that the rear. These two combined convinced us to abandon the trip and head south for the house in Prescott Valley. It would have been difficult to get a new axle installed and pick up the trip again, it could take days or weeks to source an axle. It seemed prudent to head back to Prescott Valley.
Looking at Google Maps it was shorter to go back to LoLo and south than continue through Idaho. So, LoLo then south on Hwy 93, then turned onto Hwy 28 in Salmon. First night we found a very small BLM campground outside Leadore, ID called Smokey Cub CG. Great for an overnight stay. Here a creek comes out of the moutains through a draw to the east. Below a couple of pics to the west. Someday we'll come back and see what's up the draw.
There are some boon-docking sites further south on Hwy 28 along Birch Creek. We spotted these on a prior trip but this time stopped early at Smokey Cub.
Made our way south to I15 and Idaho Falls on the second night. Then south on I15 with the next stop at Aspen Grove RV Park in Garland UT. A very new RV Park and a good overnight just off the freeway. We decided to avoid Salt Lake City by taking I84 to I80 and Hwy 189 coming out in Provo. This didn't save us any time but was more pleasant than fighting through Salt Lake City. From Provo, south on Hwy 89 all the way through Kanab to Page, AZ with a night near Panguitch. Overnight in Page and then a final drive through Flagstaff and south on I17 (and Hwy 169/69) to home in Prescott Valley.
No pictures after Smokey Cub, just a straight drive. And so much for our shortened summer 2023 travels. We don't do well with reservations, much more pleasant to go as the wind pushes us.
We hope your travels are safe and enjoyable.
