Travels with Ziggy

Oregon Coast - July 2025

After the Lost Coast and Ferndale we headed north along US-101. A quick stop in Arcata for groceries then to a small RV Park across the road from Sue-meg State Park. After the Lost Coast we needed to stock up supplies and do laundry. We did get out to Agate Beach (the California one) for a day looking for .... Agates. Found many tiny ones but not collectible. Great day at the beach though.

Then on into Oregon, our old stomping grounds.

First night we tried to stay at Humbug Mountain SP. This was a Sunday after Labor Day so we were pretty sure they'd not be full. They weren't full, lots of empty sites. But try to rent one. The host said they did not know which sites were reserved and you need to call to make a reservation (and pay the registration fee), the number is on that sign over there. But there's no cell service. Guess you're out of luck then! The Oregon State Parks used to be the best in the world. New Zealand probably a tie for that distiction though. But over the last 30-40 years we've watched them deteriorate. Sad.

Pulling out the maps we found a couple of National Forest camps outside Port Orford up the Elk River. Well, the advantages of a small rig let us easily head that way. Ended up at Sunshine Bar CG. The road in, as most do, started of as a wide paved two laner. By the campground it was "paved" and quite narrow. Our kinda road. We were the only campers in this 4-5 site CG which turned out to be free. One of our nicest camps. So humbug on those expensive places.

Off to Bandon, one of our favorite place on our favorite coast. Two nights at Bullards Beach SP where getting a site was much easier. We spent a day in town visiting Mistic Mist Chocolate Company and buying a very expensive take out crab meat and cowder lunch. Great expectations for chocolate from prior visits some 10 years ago. Fairly disapointed though, prices were higher and portions much smaller. Ah, you can never go back. But did have a great walk on a familiar beach, so maybe you can.

In Bandon we watched surfers while eating our extravagant lunch. A first for us, we saw several surfers using hydrofoil surfboards. Before seeing them we didn't know they existed. Cool.

From Bandon we headed north diverting from US-101 through Charleston and North Bend. No views of the ocean but an up close and personal look at clear cut logging. Continued north on 101 to Reedsport where we headed inland. Not HW-38 which would make sense, but up the Smith River on a road less travelled. Last time through Simth River Falls was a swimming hole for many. This time it wasn't summer so not at all crowded.

Stayed overnight on the Smith River at Vincent Creek CG. It was less crowded than the Smith River Falls CG, quite pleasant. Found a family of otters there.

After Vincent Creek we wound our way on secondary roads inland to Roseburg, away from the coast. Ya but, Waldo, where are you?
